Time Steps   Sensenhammer Version (2007)

category: Soundscape

length 37:36

"Timesteps" is a soundscape commissioned by Manfred Gipper, a painter and collage artist from Berlin, especially for an exhibition (called "Zeitreisen" = time travels) in Leverkusen near Cologne. While working on the paintings to be exhibited, Manfred Gipper often listened to my music, especially to the collage-like Cup-Up Radio, and to the MY2K diary which in itself is also like a collage. This music inspired his paintings, and so he wanted it to be around during the exhibition.

The 38 minute piece "Time Steps" in the "Sensenhammer" version (named after the industry museum where the exhibition took place) was played in an endless loop during the vernissage, and could afterwards be listened to on demand using headphones during the weeks of the exhibition.

Gipper's paintings focus on buildings and history, and collage aesthetics are used a lot. The "Time Steps" soundscape supports this - it is an acoustic collage of music and field recordings, and the walking and steps that are a recurring theme can easily be listened to like an imaginary walk through and along the buildings depicted, and through history which is occasionally evoked by little snippets of music and television themes from the fifties.
