About this diary

My resolution for the year 2000 was: to create and record 10 seconds of music on each day of the year.

This could be either a composed piece, something improvised, or just a recorded environmental sound, anything that seemed appropriate. At the end of 2000, the musical diary consisted of 366 short pieces of music - all in all, about an hour, or a good CD length.

The idea for this diary came from Karsten Schulze, a musician from Cologne/Germany. Several other musicians have taken up Karsten's idea. One of them (Jeff McLeod) has made it through and offers a CD of his diary; David Cooper Orton made it through too but decided to go for a one minute recording per week instead.

About the sounds

This is a sound diary. Beyond this, there is no coherent artistic concept in my2k.

Just like real life, with the unforeseeable happenings of each day written down in a diary book, or like a slideshow of vacation photographs, the result is a collage full of contrasts. Not an easy listen, but a sonic adventure for those who can listen with open ears.

Only in a few cases, the sound of a day consists of music in the narrow sense - a composed guitar piece, or a melody played on sampled instruments.

Most sounds are either
- environmental sounds, that is, stuff that I recorded on that specific day using a microphone, or
- environmental sounds that were tweaked and treated using sound software, or
- abstract electronic music that originated entirely in the computer, or
- electric guitar improvisations, using digital loop delays and other electronic effect gear.

No strict rule was applied. Usually, I tried to record the sound of a day on that specific day, but sometimes there was not enough time, so I created the sound for that day on the day after. Also, sometimes so many interesting sounds happened on one single day that I used them for several days afterwards. When a day had passed and its sound was recorded, I never went back to rerecord or edit it - it was left as it was, good or bad.

Review in WIRE magazine:
Compiled from 366 ten-second pieces of music or field recordings (all of which have been arranged into 53 weekly sections), Cologne musician Michael Peters's absorbing and amusing recorded diary for the beginning of the new millennium is packed with a wild mix of sounds, some treated by Peters to produce a Zappaesque form of musique concrete. While some pieces are self-explanatory (giveaway titles include "Sabine Writes With A Big Felt Pen On A Large Sheet Of Paper"), others such as "Granulated Stone On Wood Like Barking Dogs Over Linear Base Colors" only make sense once you actually hear the item in question. Shades of John McLaughlin, Can and Frank Zappa flit through the musical sections, but Peters's project has to be heard in its entirety - if only to wait for track 53, which somehow manages to regurgitate his entire recorded year in ten seconds flat.

Harold Schellinx:
Thanks so very much for making this collection available, Burning Shed! I have always been fascinated by the 'record ten seconds a day' project - that Michael and some other musicians, individually, managed to keep going throughout the year 2k - so much so that I spent quite some time 'researching' it, and then wrote an exhaustive article about it, partly history, partly review (for those interested, here's the link). This release is one of the few completed sounding 'My2k' results. It is - without doubt - a unique document, as well as a very fine record to listen to ... A must have!
