Livelooping 2008

2008 was a year full of enjoyable musical meetings and livelooping activities. Here are a few of them:

May 31 / June 6: Cologne and Berlin Livelooping Festivals

May 27: The Absurd live @ LOFT

July 23: Re Re Re and friends

Nov 26: KlangSpielRaum with Uwe Schuhmacher

Livelooping Festival Cologne

In 2008, I played on two very enjoyable livelooping festivals (in Cologne and Berlin).

The Cologne Loopfest was organized by me - the first festival that I organized myself. On stage in order of appearance: Michael Peters, Michael Frank, Harald Sack Ziegler, Fabio Anile, Craig Green, Luis Angulo, Markus Reuter, Stefan Tiedje, Fear Falls Burning, Rick Walker.

Thanks to the musicality and large variety of styles, and of the enthusiasm and work of the musicians and some helping friends it worked out pretty good, the festival was well attended, the audience loved it (as far as I heard), and thanks to our sponsors (the Kulturamt of Cologne and the SK Stiftung Kultur), I could even pay everyone afterwards which made us even more happy.

Here are some impressions from the May 31st Livelooping Festival in Cologne.

Last Minutes (Cologne Livelooping Festival, May 31, 2008)

This short improvisation was played together with Italian keyboard player Fabio Anile at the very end of his Cologne set. (We played all of his Berlin set together but there is no recording with good enough quality.) Fabio and me are now working on a CD collaboration.

Propeller Shred Guitar (live with The Absurd @ LOFT, May 27, 2008)

My solo improvisation during a gig with The Absurd, featuring my old Hagström guitar, a hand held fan, and an Echoplex. This one is not beautifully ambient, but very noisy and edgy

In July, I did some improvisations with Re Re Re musicians and some friends - enjoy!

Re Re Re and friends (session recordings, July 23, 2008)

Re Re Re are Gregor Schwellenbach (Cologne) and Tobias Vethake (Berlin). On this day in July 2008, they invited Andreas Rosenhahn (Berlin), Gerriet Sharma (Cologne), and me for a session. Here are recordings of a duo I did with Tobias, and of two very enjoyable collective improvisations. Thanks to Tobias for the recordings!

Besides playing guitar and my guitar-controlled digital mellotron, I contributed lots of samples, using my new Trekstor 8GB mp3-player and a Soundbug speaker (see photo at the bottom of this page), picking up the speaker signal via the guitar pickups which allows me to feed the samples through guitar effects and loops. Big fun!

KlangSpielRaum (live with Uwe Schuhmacher, November 26)

KlangSpielRaum (sound playroom) is a regular improvised music concert series by multi-instrumentalist Uwe Schuhmacher, taking place in a beautiful modern church in Bonn. On November 26, we played a duo improvisation together that we both liked ... and the audience did too!
